Tuesday was our 6th day of Potty Training-and it seemed that each day since day one, the potty training became worse and worse and worse. Granted we had obstacles in the way, Eva came down with her cold on Sunday morning, and I came down with the stomach flu Sunday night, and in between all that excitement no one was sleeping! Tuesday I was starting to feel a little better, but just exhausted-which I am sure contributed to the "non-patient potty training mom." Monday-Isabella had the WORST diaper rash ever, and we had just started using Pull-Ups 24 hours before that, I don't know why her skin got so irritated with the pull-ups because I was changing them twice as often as her diapers. Well, I didn't want to go back to diapers, so I thought we are just going to make the transition to big girl undies and I know she will HATE the feeling of being wet, so maybe after a couple of accidents she will want to sit on the potty. ha Ha HA...yeah right! We had many accidents that day-the problem with the accidents is that she didn't want to have accidents, but she didn't want to go in the potty, so she was holding it and holding it until she couldn't hold it anymore. Well, this idea was not working, and I didn't want her to suffer with bum rash, so I made the decision to go back to diapers. I noticed a couple days later she was doing this weird dance, I just assumed she was putting two and two together and was realizing the sensation of having to go. By, Friday her little dance turned into, "Mom it hurts." Uggghhh...so I called her pediatrician and told them I assumed she has U.T.I or bladder infection. We went to the Ped's office and she was freaking out about having her temperature checked so the doc decided he didn't want to traumatize her with having to catheterize her (and we have had that done before, so I knew it would be traumatizing). He said let's just assume she is really irritated down there and prescribe some cream, and if she isn't feeling better by Monday we will have to cath her. Sounded like a great plan, right? Then the doc proceeded to tell me that if she got a fever and started vomiting she needed to be seen in the ER over the weekend. Well, we went home and she was acting fine, we went trick or treating at Chris's work, and she really started acting out of it, and couldn't stay awake. We came home, put her to bed at 7:00 (and what kid goes to bed at 7:00 after trick or treating?) Sure enough, 3 hours later she has a fever and is puking everywhere. So, Chris and I packed up Eva-dropped her off at my in-laws and headed up to the E.R.
I was dreading the E.R. because I knew how long we'd have to sit there-we were already exhausted from a terrible week, and we didn't want to have to deal with all the swine flu victims up at the ER. Sure enough we get checked in, and the people who were checking in right after us were complaining of the swine flu with a 105 degree temp. We walked around every corner and sanitized our hands, there were swine flu people in every room of the ER it seemed like all you couple hear was people coughing everywhere!
Sure enough, they had to cath her, I was soooo beyond tired and Chris and I had to hold her down on the bed, I just started to cry! After a long and tiring week, this was the last straw-I couldn't handle it! We sat in the ER for 2 1/2 hours, they came back and said sure enough she had a U.T.I., and they gave her some oral antibiotics. They said that if she threw it up over night, we needed to come right back to the ER....really, who wants to deal with that for the second time in one night??? Well, we got discharged from our room, started walking out and Isa threw up all her medicine. Chris and I looked at each other...sighed....and walked right back into the room. They came in with a shot, and said, "Just so you know, this is a really painful shot!" Ughhh....really? At this point, I just wanted to yell at my pediatrician for not helping us out 8 hours previously to this mess! Finally at 1:00 we were discharged (for the second time). Isabella just kept saying, "Cheeseburger, Nuggets?" She hadn't eaten in 12 hours. So we hit the Burger King drive through. We looked in the back seat and the poor little thing was sound asleep with her nuggets in her hands.
So....this leads up to my potty training update.....obviously she had a U.T.I. during potty training, and that's why she was refusing to go, and she was holding it because it hurt. Let me just say, I felt like THE WORST MOM in the world for getting so frustrated by day 6. I have been beating myself up over it all weekend. So, potty training has been a terrible experience, It's going to have to sit on hold for a couple months until we are ready to try again!
So, the potty training issues also leads up to our crappy Halloween experience! Since Isabella felt yucky and she was beyond exhausted from being up all night Friday, most of Saturday was spent trying to get a nap in and trying to get Isabella to take her medications! I felt sooo bad that she had been so excited for Halloween and we were missing so many cool things, like dressing up and going down to the grocery store to trick or treat-going outside-taking lots of pictures, etc. etc. etc. It just broke my heart. But then, the door bell rang and it was my sweet brother and sister in law holding a pumpkin full of candy, stickers, stamps, glow sticks, books, stuffed animals and the whole works. I know we told them thank you about 20 times, but they honestly don't know how much it meant to us that they were so kind and caring to think of our little girl on Halloween!
By Halloween night she was feeling "a little" better, and her fever was gone. So we put on her costume-minus all the cool make-up that was suppose to go with it-and we went to visit Grandma's and Grandpa's. She got sooooo excited when trick or treaters came to the door-she would run to the door each time so she could see all the neat costumes, it was sooo great to see her smiling!
Today she even asked Chris if she could sit on the potty....who knows, maybe she will surprise me and potty train????
Here's Isabella Friday evening-happy as a camper, you wouldn't know she wasn't feeling good. She was so excited to wear her "Dora Zombie" costume that daddy rigged up for her.
Here she is just an hour later on Friday all dressed up for Qwest's trick or treating. She went from just fine to really sick that quick. She really was the cutest Zombie Dora when she was smiling, but since she was feeling yucky, she played the Zombie part a little too well and was a very convincing Zombie!
Eva was a happy camper and quite the party animal...she had a blast!

That is so sad!! I hope things go better for you. When Morgan was potty training, she got a UTI and I didn't know it. She started peeing her pants after going in the potty for months. I got so mad at her and then found out she had a UTI. Man, I felt like a GREAT mom :) Send get better wishes your way!
I'M SO SORRY FOR THE BAD WEEK! I KNOW HOW IT FEELS WHEN YOU THINK YOUR THE WORST MOM EVER. BUT I THINK YOUR A GREAT MOM AND YOUR LITTLE GIRL KNOWS IT... POTTY TRAINING WILL COME, DON'T LET IT GET YOU DOWN. IT WILL HAPPEN!!!!
What a sad story. For your and for her. Hope you are all doing better this week.
And I complained about my day... Just needed a little perspective. I think they oughtta just put the kid out to cath them because I can't imagine how traumatizing that is for them. Poor Isa.
My advice (and you don't have to listen) is don't give up on the potty training. But my BIGGEST mistake was getting frustrated and mean. I think the best advice is to stay positive. With all of it. When you decide to try undies again, put the little potty right in the room with her wherever she is and let her have accidents. When she does, just tell her she needs to go change into some dry clothes. You can help her a little but she should do it mostly herself since she's such a big girl now. Tell her how happy it would make you if she used her potty and just stop all the reminders. Kids that age are smart and they want the control so let her have it. But she still wants to please you so she'll do it eventually. We had a candy jar visible that she got to pick from everytime she went. It really only took a few days once we went with underwear and stuck with it. Also, I think you have to make the decision: no more diapers. And then stay consistent. If she thinks you might give in she can probably outlast you. Of course we used Pull-ups at night, but if she doesn't do well with those just use a regular diaper.
Such a frustrating time with these little stubborn toddlers. But I picture her asleep with her nuggets in her hand and can't help but smile :)
That is the sadest story I have heard in a long time, for EVERYONE involved. Here's to hoping you have a better week this week.
If it makes you feel better I think I have gained 5 lbs in the last few days from all my kids candy, so there is a plus for ya:)
So sorry about the bad weekend. We have had the swine flu at our house for the last week and a half. Parker had it all last week and Tucker came down with it on Friday night. He didn't get to go trick or treating either. I took his bucket to the ward trunk or treat and got him candy. I looked like an idiot, carrying around a bucket getting candy, but my little boy was sick and he needed candy! Good luck with everything , hopefully the potty training will pick up soon. Let me know if you need anything!
Oh my gosh Melissa! I am so sorry about all the trauma. Poor little thing. What a darling little Zombie Dora though. Love Eva and the witch costume too. Don't feel like a bad mom. You are doing great. Potty Training is just a challenging thing. I'd suggest staying away from the "cool alert" pull ups. They irritated Sam's little bum so bad. The have sorbitol crystals in them that are suppose to dissolve and stay cool so the child can "feel" wet. After trying these, I decided to just invest in a really great cloth diaper. One that I could just wash over and over but that would also be free of anything weird that could irritate her skin. It worked great for us. Sam could feel when she was wet, but it wouldn't get all over her like it does with underwear. We only had to use it a few times and best of all, her little bum didn't get red at all.
It's times like these that break our heart and pulls us to move back to Utah. I wish the Lord could give us that signal that it's time to move back and confirm our work here is done!
We love you!
Mom and Dad
I am so sorry you had to deal with all of that. What a challenge. I think you just let her do it when she wants. I'm sorry about the ER. The hospital is full of the h1n1. You are a good mom. They sure looked cute in their costumes though. If you need a break this week, please bring your girls over! We would love to play. And we aren't sick!
So sorry about your week. I know my kids, Alan anyway, always looks forward to Holloween. You are not a bad mom, nobody is perfect and you have to remember that you are just trying to do what is best for her. I hope you have a better week. Don't worry about potty training. It will happen when she is ready.
Just know you definitely aren't alone in your boat of motherhood! I've had plenty of those "mom of the year" moments. Don't worry, Isa knows her mommy loves her. You do plenty of great things to show her. Being a mom is truly a learning experience. The Lord knows we will make mistakes with our kids but I really believe He gives us opportunities to make it right. Good luck!
Oh dear it looks like you had a not so fun week either :( I also want to know who your pediatrician is. It would have been a good idea to just give you the antibiotics and say if she has more symptoms take them...if not don't bother. But I guess hindsight is always 20/20. Poor thing! I hope your all feeling better.
You really have had quite the week! Potty training can be so frustrating. Hopefully it will go easy for you now she'll be feeling better.
bless you little heart!!!!!Hang in there girl it has to get better. Call if you need anything....
All I have to say is "REALLY"! That sucks. Hope she gets all the way better along with the rest of you.
Melissa- I am so sorry- what a traumatizing week! I hope things are going better and that Isabella is back to her happy self. The girls sure look cute in their costumes. Hang in there- I am thinking of you!
sorry you had such a bad week. sounds like lots of things going on! i hope that everyone is doing better and you were able to have a good halloween. love the dora costume by the way!
oh wow -- that is so sad!!! try not to get discouraged with the potty training stuff . . . (easier said than done, I know!) she will eventually get it!!! PROMISE!!!! ;)
